ABOUT THIS PART

A 120 micron food grade nylon filter sock for 6 inch material columns, double stitched throughout, with a tie top rather than a drawstring. Buy one, or buy a pack of 10, 20 or 50 and the price per sock comes down. Also searched as a filter bag, a material sock or a column sock.

Price per sock, and what a pack saves

Most shops run through these ten at a time, which is why the packs exist. The per-sock price is what to compare.

Sizes

Size Actual cut length
6 in x 24 in 26 in
6 in x 48 in 52 in

Cut longer than the name, on purpose. A sock cut to the exact column height comes up short the moment it is packed full, so the extra length is what lets you pack tight and still have something to tie.

How it loads

  1. Stand a section of 6 inch PVC on the bench and drop the sock in.
  2. Flip the top back over the outside of the pipe.
  3. Pack your flower, then tie the string around the end and cinch it tight.
  4. Freeze the whole thing. On run day it drops straight into the material column, already dense.

Two 24 inch socks tie together like nunchucks and load as one 48 inch column. That is the way around a ceiling too low to lift a full 48 inch sock over a column.

Fitment

  • Fits 6 inch material columns on N.B. Oler 10, 20 and 40 LB systems, and any 6 inch material column of the same bore.
  • The 24 inch also suits molecular sieve beads, which keeps the beads contained instead of loose in the housing.
  • Does not fit 4 inch or 8 inch columns. Six inch only.

Reuse, and when to retire one

  • Washable and reusable. Wash a used sock in a 20 L rotovap and you also reclaim what is left on the mesh.
  • Service life is a house policy call. Some shops retire a sock weekly for contamination control, others run the same sock six months.
  • Every seam is double stitched, including the bottom seam, which is the one that fails on a loaded sock. That is why these outlast hand stitched bags.
  • 120 micron is the coarse stage by design. The sintered discs downstream run 50 and 20 micron on the material columns, and the sock exists to keep bulk material off them. See Sintered Filter Technical Specifications.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Can I buy just one?

Yes. Singles are $44.00 in the 24 inch and $55.00 in the 48 inch. Packs of 10, 20 and 50 bring the price per sock down, so if you run through these ten at a time the pack is the cheaper way.

What do the packs cost?

24 inch: $440.00 for 10, $860.00 for 20 at $43.00 each, $2,100.00 for 50 at $42.00 each. 48 inch: $520.00 for 10 at $52.00 each, $1,020.00 for 20 at $51.00 each, $2,500.00 for 50 at $50.00 each.

Can I order an odd quantity, or more than 50?

Call the shop at 541-330-6409 and we will put it together.

Is the top a drawstring?

No, it ties. Flip the top back over the outside of a section of 6 in PVC, pack the sock, then tie the string around the end and cinch it tight. That is what makes a pre-packed frozen column possible.

How do I pre-pack a column?

Stand a section of 6 in PVC on the bench, drop the sock in, flip the top over the outside of the pipe, pack your flower, tie it off tight, and freeze the whole thing. On run day it drops straight into the material column already frozen and dense.

Why is the 24 inch sock actually 26 inches?

Because a sock cut to the exact column height comes up short once it is packed full. The extra length is what lets you pack tight and still have material to tie off.

Can I use two 24 inch socks instead of one 48?

Yes. Tie two 24 inch socks together like nunchucks and load them as one 48 inch column. That is the answer for a shop without the ceiling height to lift a full 48 inch sock over the top of a column.

Can these be washed and reused?

Yes. Wash a used sock in a 20 L rotovap and you also reclaim what is left on the mesh. How long you keep running one is a house policy call. Some operators retire a sock weekly for contamination control, others run the same sock six months.

What does the sock actually do?

It holds the material and catches plant matter before it reaches your sintered filters. Every sock you change is a sintered filter you did not have to pull and ultrasonically clean.

Does 120 micron let too much through?

It is meant to. The sock is the coarse stage. The sintered discs downstream run 50 and 20 micron on the material columns, and the sock exists to keep the bulk material off them.

Why double stitched?

The bottom seam is what fails on a loaded sock. Every seam on these is double stitched, including the bottom, which is why they outlast hand stitched bags.

Can I use these for molecular sieve beads?

Yes, the 24 inch. It keeps the beads contained instead of loose in the housing, which saves the mess on a changeout.

What size column do they fit?

6 inch material columns. There is no 4 inch or 8 inch version.

Can I try one before I order?

Yes. We will send you one 6 x 24 free, postage on us, one per shop, US addresses. Run it against whatever you are using now and decide from there. Email info@nboler.com with your shipping address, or call 541-330-6409.
