ABOUT THIS PART

Type K thermocouple extension cable, built by hand in our shop, 6 to 25 feet off the list and any length you ask for. $134.95 to $180.95.

The standard build is a standard size female jack on the probe end and a mini male plug on the logger end. Our probes end in a standard male plug and our four channel loggers take mini, so this cable is the adapter between them, not an accessory. A probe and a logger bought without it are two things that do not connect.

Why these are long

  • An extraction room running propane, butane or isobutane is a Class I Division 1 space, and electrical equipment inside it is expected to carry a C1D1 listing. A four channel SD card logger does not have one
  • Our certifier, 3P Certz, has determined that on our systems the logger may stay in the booth as long as it is at least 12 feet from the machine, because the device sits only marginally over the intrinsic safety energy limit. Twelve feet is the floor
  • If your room will not give you that, the logger goes outside the wall instead and the run gets longer again. Confirm either arrangement with whoever certifies your own room before you rely on it
  • So measure probe to logger by the route the cable will actually take. A 6 foot cable does not cover 12 feet, and it will not reach through a wall

Lengths and prices

Not on the list? Every one of these is built to order anyway, so ask for the run you need. Four foot, thirty foot, whatever the distance is.

What it is made of

  • PTFE on the conductor and PTFE on the jacket, 20 AWG solid. Most extension cable sold for this job is PVC, rated to about 105 °C (221 °F), and PVC does not do well around solvent. PTFE is good to around 260 °C (500 °F) and does not care
  • The connector body is the temperature limit of the assembly, not the wire. A standard thermocouple connector is molded in glass filled nylon, a class of part rated to about 180 °C (356 °F), so treat the whole cable as a 180 °C (356 °F) assembly. Anyone quoting a type K cable at 1,260 °C (2,300 °F) is quoting the bare alloy, not the thing in the box
  • Not shielded
  • Length is measured end to end, including the connectors
  • Built one at a time on the bench, about 15 to 20 minutes each, which is why any length is available

Ends, any combination you need

  • Standard K male, standard K female, mini K male, mini K female, any two on the same cable
  • Nobody else offers this, which is why people call us for the odd one. Tell us what you are plugging into at each end
  • No bare or stripped ends unless you ask for them

Built to order in Bend, Oregon. Give us a length and two ends. More on where electrical equipment can sit in a classified room in Site Requirements and Utilities for a Hydrocarbon System.

WHY LONG LENGTHSA data logger must sit at least 12 ft from the machine, or outside the room entirely
BUILT OR STOCKEDBuilt to order in Bend, about 15 to 20 minutes each
FITSConnects our 1/4 inch K type thermocouple probes, which terminate in a standard size male plug, to our 4-channel K type data logger, which takes mini. Also fits any type K probe with a standard male plug and any instrument with a mini female socket. If your ends are different, we will build it with whatever combination of standard and mini, male and female, you need. Sized for the distance a data logger has to keep from the machine, at least 12 ft on our systems per our certifier, or a run out of the room entirely. Does NOT have bare or stripped ends unless you ask for them. Not shielded, and not rated above about 180 °C (356 °F) at the connector.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What length do I need?

Measure from the probe to where the logger will actually sit, by the route the cable will take. Twelve feet is the floor if the logger stays in the room, and further if it goes through a wall, so most runs are longer than people expect. A 6 foot cable does not cover 12 feet.

Why can my data logger not sit next to the machine?

An extraction room running propane, butane or isobutane is a Class I Division 1 space, and electrical equipment inside it is expected to carry a C1D1 listing. A four channel SD card logger does not have one. Our certifier, 3P Certz, has determined that on our systems the logger may stay in the booth provided it is at least 12 feet from the machine, because the device sits only marginally over the intrinsic safety energy limit. If your room will not give you 12 feet, it goes outside the wall. Confirm either arrangement with whoever certifies your own room.

Can you make one in a length that is not listed?

Yes. We build every one of these to order, so tell us the run you need and we will cut it to that. That includes short ones, a 4 foot is no problem, it just is not a listed size any more.

Can you put different ends on it?

Yes, and this is the part nobody else does. Standard K male, standard K female, mini K male, mini K female, any two of them on the same cable. Tell us what you are plugging into at each end.

What is on the standard one?

A standard size female jack on the probe end and a mini male plug on the logger end. No bare or stripped ends.

Why do I need one at all?

Our probes terminate in a standard male plug and our data loggers take mini. The two do not connect to each other. This cable is the adapter, not an accessory.

How hot can it go?

Treat it as about 180 °C (356 °F). The PTFE insulated wire is good to around 260 °C (500 °F), but the glass filled nylon connector body is the lower limit and it governs the assembly. If you see a type K cable advertised at 1,260 °C (2,300 °F), that is the bare alloy figure, not the assembled cable.

Why is it more than the ones in the catalogs?

Two reasons. Most extension cable for this job is PVC insulated, rated to about 105 °C (221 °F), and PVC does not do well around solvent. Ours is PTFE on the conductor and PTFE on the jacket in 20 AWG solid. And we build each one by hand to the length and the ends you ask for, which is a service, not a stock item.

How long does it take to get one?

Each cable is about 15 to 20 minutes on the bench, so every length is effectively in stock. Orders usually go out the same day.

How is the length measured?

End to end, including the connectors.

Is it shielded?

No.
